Ravi Tailor
If you are already a top professional tailor, who would you trust to cut your own suits? Who would be your tailor’s tailor? I wouldn’t hesitate to call on Ravi Tailor, whom I have known for almost all of the 20 years that I have worked in and around Savile Row. And yes – his father changed the family name to that of his profession, having been bespoke tailors in India and Zambia for three generations before settling in the UK. Ravi has become a good friend. He is full of bonhomie and good cheer, a great spirit and real character in the trade. One perhaps imagines a tailor sequestered in his cutting room, hidden from the hustle and bustle of city life. But one of Ravi’s important qualities is his sociability – with clients and colleagues alike. He knows the importance of quality both in his work and in his dealings with clients. Which is doubtless why he spends much of his time travelling the world advising and supporting them in all matters sartorial.
When he’s in London, you’ll find him at the premises of Anthony J. Hewitt, where he is now Managing Director. (You can watch a video of him at work there, fitting top cricketer Sachin Tendulkar: click on ‘Ravi Tailor’ on the menu sidebar and then click on the video link.) The company has a longstanding Savile Row reputation with a client list of famous names from business, commerce, politics and the media. So you can expect workmanship of the highest standard applied to design and cutting completely up to date. Ravi would be the perfect recommendation for any male colleagues, friends or family looking for bespoke garments of distinction and modernity. What a delightful profile! It’s interesting to think that most modern Western surnames derive from the trades and professions of previous generations eg Scrivener, Thatcher etc. Taylor too I’m sure. How charming that this family of tailors changed their name to match their profession!
